The saltmarshes can be found on the sheltered side of the island, They extend from the Bull Bridge to the most northern tip of the island. Plants that grow in this area are highly specialised as they are inundated by salt water regularly.
The saltmarshes provide safe roosting sites at high water for almost all the birds that winter in Dublin Bay. The large numbers of birds present in such a small area in winter attract peregrine, merlins and sparrowhawks.
During autumn long distance migrant species have been seen on the salt marsh the most notable being the buff-breasted sandpiper from North America.
The narrow tidal creeks that sneak through the salt marsh provide sheltered places for grey herons, little egrets and redshanks.
